PERKINSTON — Margarita Lopareva and Alden Davis have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for March 19-25.
Lopareva, a freshman from Moscow, Russia, won all five of her singles matches last week for No. 16 Gulf Coast. She won four against MACJC opponents, but her most impressive win came in a match against No. 10 Cowley County. Lopareva, who hasn't lost a singles match all spring, won that one in straight sets.
Davis, a freshman first baseman from Pascagoula, batted .818 in four wins for No. 18 Mississippi Gulf Coast and had the walk-off hit in a 6-5 comeback win over Copiah-Lincoln. He delivered the RBI single in the eighth inning to cap a 4-for-4 night that included a double. Davis also had a solo home run in a 10-3 win over Coahoma, then went 3-for-3 in a 12-2 win in the nightcap.
Kaylynn Garrett, a freshman infielder from Oxford, Ala., batted .727 with 1 home run and 7 RBI during Mississippi Gulf Coast's 2-2 week. She has hit in all six games since her return from injury and had three multi-hit games for the Lady Bulldogs.
Sydney Davis, a freshman pitcher from Clinton, appeared three times in relief for No. 8 Mississippi Gulf Coast and struck out 9 in 7.1 innings. She got the win in an 8-5 win over Delta by pitching 4 innings of 2-hit ball, allowing only 1 run.
Kole Kittrell, a right-handed reliever from Greene County, pitched 5 sparkling innings in relief to stymie Copiah-Lincoln and allow No. 18 Mississippi Gulf Coast to come back in a 6-5 win in 8 innings. He struck out 7 and allowed only 1 hit.
