MGCCC plays 2 at MGM Park

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast has played more than its fair share of games at MGM Park, and the Bulldogs head down this weekend for two more.

It's still always a thrill for them to make the trip down to Biloxi.

"It's always a great venue to play in," Gulf Coast coach Rodney Batts said. "It's a state-of-the-art facility. Not many college guys get to play in a Double-A ballpark. It's good for us to go down there and play and get to play in such a nice park."

Gulf Coast (11-1) plays Illinois Central at noon Saturday, with a 6 p.m. game scheduled against Baton Rouge. The Bulldogs' two opponents will play each other in the middle of the three-game day.

Tickets are $13.50 and can be purchased on TicketFly at

Gulf Coast played its entire home slate there two years ago while a new stadium was built at Ken "Curly" Farris Field. The Bulldogs returned last year for a pair of games.

"It gives us a chance to play somewhere different on the Coast," Batts said. "Some people who may be further away and don't get the chance to come up here and see us play, it gives them a chance to see us play in their own backyard."

Gulf Coast played Illinois Central to open the new stadium in Perkinston last year. The Bulldogs won the first game 1-0 but fell 3-1 in the second.

"I don't know a lot about them," Batts said. "They're gonna be good. They're a quality team every year. We faced some really good arms here last year. We need that right now."

The Bulldogs defeated the Bears (4-14) twice at Baton Rouge in mid-February. Gulf Coast won 18-3 and 5-0.
