Gulf Coast falls at JCJC, awaits playoff fate

ELLISVILLE — Mississippi Gulf Coast will have to wait until Saturday to learn its playoff fate after falling 28-14 at Jones County on Thursday.

Special teams, turnovers and missed tackles cost the Bulldogs, who fall to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the MACJC South. Gulf Coast will advance to the postseason as long as it stays out of a three-way tie with East Central and Copiah-Lincoln.

East Central (4-4, 4-1) would have to lose at Southwest (2-6, 1-4), and Co-Lin (5-3, 3-2) would have to win at Pearl River (2-6, 2-3) to eliminate the Bulldogs. Co-Lin kicks off at 2 p.m., and East Central at 5.

If the Bulldogs qualify, it would be as the second-place team, which would earn them a rematch at East Mississippi.

Gulf Coast turned the ball over twice Thursday, one an interception and the other a fumble. Those turnovers came on the first two possessions of the second half, and the second led to a short touchdown drive.

There was also a failed fake field goal and blocked field goal.

Jones (6-3, 3-3) ran the ball for 302 yards, throwing for just 53. Gulf Coast outgained the Bobcats by nearly 100 yards, running for 175 and throwing for 273.

Brandon Martin (6-4, 217, Fr., Prime Prep Academy/New Orleans) caught six passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. Larry Sisson (6-0, 210, So., Resurrection/Pascagoula) completed 24 of 40 passes, with Jonathan Nance (6-2, 187, So., Gulfport/Gulfport) catching six for 78 yards and Lester Wells (6-0, 180, So., Adams County Christian/Natchez) grabbing five for 66 yards.

T'Rod Daniels (5-9, 190, So., Bassfield/Bassfield) ran 11 times for 68 yards and a 27-yard second-quarter touchdown, with Ge'Vonte Jones (5-11, 175, So., Charleston/Charleston) picking up 77 yards on 14 carries.

Daniels' score tied the game at 7, but JCJC added a field goal in the final two minutes of the first half and the next 18 points in the second to pull away.
