Gulf Coast looks to finish at EMCC

Gulf Coast looks to finish at EMCC

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast saw a big lead all but evaporate in its season-opening win over Itawamba.

The biggest improvement Bulldogs coach Chad Huff wants to see from his team this week when it travels to No. 2 East Mississippi is to fix that Thursday.

"I want to see us finish," he said. "I want to see us play 60 minutes. These games with East Mississippi, the momentum has changed so much throughout the game. It's battling that momentum and overcoming, understanding whether we're up or down, we have to play 60 minutes."

The game at Sullivan-Windham Field kicks off at 7 p.m. Watch online at http://emccathletics.com/video/YouTubeLive or listen to the Bulldogs on SuperTalk 103.1 FM or online at https://livestream.com/BulldogLIVE/events/7701250.

Gulf Coast downed Itawamba 42-41 after being up 21 points, stopping a two-point conversion after the final horn to win. East Mississippi rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to be Jones County 47-34 in its opener.

The Lions have LSU transfer quarterback Lindsey Scott calling their signals. He passed for 429 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions in his debut. Scott ran for 62 yards.

"He does a good job for them running their offense," Huff said. "He does a good job with his feet buying some time. He made some good decision last week in the Jones game."

Kirk Merritt, a transfer from Texas A&M, had seven catches for 180 yards and a score.

Gulf Coast saw the duo of Torrance Gibson (So, American Heritage/Plantation, Fla.) and Deandre Torrey (Fr, Gautier/Gautier) combine for more than 370 yards rushing last week. Success in the running game will be critical this week.

"They're going to be physical up front," Huff said. "We're going to have to do a good job establishing the run to run our offense. We know what we have to do."

JCJC ran for 201 yards last week and threw for another 307.

Gulf Coast won the turnover battle last week 2-0 thanks to two Darius Townsend (Fr, Laurel/Laurel) fumble recoveries.

"We're going to have to do a really good job getting everybody to the ball and keeping everything in front of us," Huff said. "Make them earn it instead of letting them get behind us."
