Morgan’s 7 treys lead Gulf Coast past Co-Lin

PERKINSTON — How long did it take Mississippi Gulf Coast guard Winston Morgan to realize he was going to have a good night?

"When first one went in. I'm not going to lie. I've been working hard in practice, and I've been shooting well. I've gotta give it to my teammates. They've been setting me up well.

He made the first of seven 3-pointers less than three minutes in Monday and the Bulldogs won easily over Copiah-Lincoln, 74-63.

Gulf Coast (15-3, 6-2 MACJC South) remains in a second-place tie with Southwest in the division, one game back of No. 10 Jones County. The Bulldogs play Thursday at East Central.

Morgan (5-10, 170, So., East Catholic/Manchester, Conn.) shot 7-of-11 from long range and finished with 23, and Tedrian Brisco (6-5, 195, So., Porter's Chapel/Vicksburg) added 16 points and six rebounds.

Zach Parker (6-2, 185, So., Biloxi/Biloxi) had 13 points, seven assists and three steals. Davion Cole-Johnson sat much of the night with foul trouble but still led the team with nine rebounds. Harvey Smart (6-3, 167, So., West Harrison/Gulfport) also had nine rebounds and had five assists.

Morgan and Smart had 3-pointers in an 8-0 run late in the first half that helped the Bulldogs take a 37-31 lead into the locker room.

Morgan and Parker had three long-range bombs apiece during a 19-4 run that put Gulf Coast up 22 with 5:32 left.

"We were playing with poise," Morgan said. "We're trying to get better playing as a team. When we have somebody down, we want to keep them down."

Gulf Coast held Co-Lin (9-9, 3-6) to 18 points in the first 15:43 of the second half, but the Wolves were able to chop into the lead by scoring 16 down the stretch while the Bulldogs were trying to run the clock out.

"I thought we were pretty good considering the way the game was played until the last four minutes," Gulf Coast coach Wendell Weathers. "We turned the ball over, we made some mistakes."
