PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast shooting guard Zach Parker has signed to continue his collegiate career at NCAA Division II Eastern New Mexico University.
"I wanted to try something different and be away from home," Parker said. "I really like the coach there. We have a good vibe. I think I'm a good fit for the team."
Eastern New Mexico, located in Portales, plays in the Lone Star Conference. Coach Tres Segler is entering his second season in charge, having turned around a program that went 6-21 before he arrived. The Greyhounds finished 13-15 last year.
Parker, a 6-foot-2, 185-pounder from Biloxi High School, averaged 17.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists last year, helping the Bulldogs to their second straight 19-7 mark. He averaged 42.3 percent from behind the 3-point line and 81.5 percent on his free-throw attempts.
He had a career-high 31 points against Bishop State last season and scored 20-plus points seven times.
Parker said Gulf Coast coach Wendell Weathers and assistant Matt Hardy played a big role in his maturation.
"I learned a lot," he said. "I learned how to be a better man. I learned a lot about life. We've got two great coaches that helped me do anything and everything. That's why I'm glad I came to Mississippi Gulf Coast, to be a bigger and better person on and off the court."
