Chan signs with Nebraska

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast's men's basketball standout Dedoch Chan has signed to continue his collegiate playing career at Nebraska.

"We knew from the day we signed him there was a very good possibility that he'd leave after one year," Bulldogs coach Wendell Weathers said. "The fact he went to Nebraska doesn't surprise me. He's a very good player with a bright future."

Weathers thought Chan was the best freshman in the MACJC last year, and he put up a convincing stat line. The 6-foot-8 freshman from Rochester, Minn., averaged nearly a double-double during a 16-9 season for the Bulldogs. He scored 16.8 points and grabbed 8.3 rebounds, both of which led the team.

He shot 30.0 percent from the 3-point line and 47.0 percent from the field, racking up eight double-doubles as a freshman. His biggest game came in a 33-point, 17-rebound night against Meridian.

Chan was an NCAA qualifier coming out of high school, but he came to Gulf Coast to improve his recruiting profile. He did that by earning All-Region 23 and All-MACJC South First Team honors.

Nebraska went 22-11 last season, finishing fifth in the Big Ten conference. The Huskers earned a trip to the NIT.

"I'm very happy to add a player as productive as Dedoch has been at his junior college," Nebraska Coach Tim Miles said." The Huskers needed another player with size in the rotation, and Dedoch fits the bill. He's a great young man, and we are proud to have in our program. I can't wait to get started to work with him."

Gulf Coast has developed a reputation in the college basketball world for turning out players with good character, and the school's academic environment means they are ready to take on the classroom at the next level.

"It means the world to our program to have had a kid of his caliber here," Weathers said. "It shows to everybody else what you can do and what you can accomplish at Mississippi Gulf Coast. He's just one in a long line who have come here and gone on to play at major universities."
