No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast against used superior team depth to cruise to victory in the latest MACJC tournament.
The Bulldogs shot 11-over-par 299 to tie for the low score of the day and win by 10 strokes over Copiah-Lincoln. All five Gulf Coast golfers finished in the top 13 of the 60-golfer field, led by Wyatt Adkison, who lost in a two-hole playoff to Co-Lin's Joseph Dendy.
"We played all right," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "Good enough to win, but we kind of limped in. It was really windy today and the greens were really fast and sent the scores up."
Adkison (5-7, 210, so., East Central/Hurley) shot 73 to finish in a tie with Dendy, who eagled the second playoff hole. Adkison had said last week he wasn't playing that well.
"My swing had gotten a little out of kilter, and I worked really hard on it the week before the tournament," he said. "It clicked together, and I struck it really, really well."
Colby Entriken (6-0, 160, fr., Hancock/Pass Christian) matched Adkison's second-round score to finish at 3-over in a tie for 10th. Logan Leary (5-11, 120, fr., Gonzales/Dutchtown, La.), at 4-over, was in 13th.
Gulf Coast played without Colin Troxler, who was a second-team All-American last year and also a member of the Division II All-Freshman team. He injured himself last week and wasn't ready for the event.
It didn't slow down the Bulldogs, who have thrived in the early going with their team depth.
"It's a great thing," Adkison said. "It makes it really hard when we qualify, but it makes us better and makes us want to earn it even more."
