SAUCIER — Logan Leary shot 2-under par to lead Mississippi Gulf Coast in Monday's first round of the MGCCC Fall Invitational. He's one off the leader.
The Bulldogs finished at 17-over 305 and are 15 back of Meridian, which leads both the overall team standings and the fourth MACJC event scoreboard.
"Logan played really well," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "He was the bright spot on the team. It was just one of those days when we all played poorly."
The Bulldogs are tied for third among MACJC teams and sixth overall. There are seven teams from out of state playing in the tournament.
Leary (5-11, 120, fr., Gonzales/Dutchtown, La.) had an eagle and four birdies on his way to second place after 18 holes. The tournament concludes Tuesday at Grand Bear Golf Course.
Meridian's Lance Strickland fired a 69 for the lead, with teammate Jacob Berry tied for second.
Gulf Coast's Colby Blake (5-11, 155, fr., Parklane/Tylertown) played as an individual and finished at 2-over.
Jonathon Newman (5-9, 135, so., North Pike/Summit) is tied for 32nd at 77, with Brandon Fontenot (6-7, 130, so., Gulfport/Gulfport) playing as individual also in that logjam. Teammate Wyatt Adkison (5-7, 210, so., East Central/Hurley) is another shot back tied for 42nd.
Jackson Wedgeworth (6-2, fr., West Jones/Soso) shot an 80 and is tied for 52nd.
"Jackson made a triple and a quad," Snell said. "If he just bogeys those holes, we're five shots better there and have a shot at it. Now, we're going to have to have a spectacular round, which we can do. We're capable. We just have to play well tomorrow."
