SAUCIER — Mississippi Gulf Coast's Colby Blake finished fourth in the MGCCC Fall Invitational, and the Bulldogs came in tied for fifth overall.
Among MACJC competitors only, Blake was second and Gulf Coast finished third in the tournament played at Grand Bear Golf Course and completed Tuesday.
"I just kept the ball in the fairway and put it on the greens," said Blake.
He shot even-par 72 in the final round, and his 2-over for the tournament was three off the pace of the overall medalist, Kalle Nilsson of Spring Hill. Meridian's Lance Strickland won MACJC medalist with an even-par 144.
"Colby's been playing really well," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "He shot 65 out here a week ago in qualifying. He's a promising freshman. All four freshmen are really good. It's gonna be a fun spring."
Gulf Coast's Logan Leary (5-11, 120, fr., Gonzales/Dutchtown, La.) tied for fifth overall, missing out on joining Blake on the Fall Invitational All-Tournament Team by scorecard playoff, but he earned those honors in the MACJC field.
The MGCCC Fall Invitational was two tournaments in one this year, with nine MACJC teams plus seven from out of state competing. The MACJC teams also had a division they played in for additional awards.
Meridian won both team titles, finishing 13-over. Copiah-Lincoln was second in the MACJC field 13 shots back, and the Bulldogs were another 7 behind.
Blake was playing as an individual
Wyatt Adkison (5-7, 210, so., East Central/Hurley) finished 15th overall at 6-over.
Gulf Coast finished the fall MACJC schedule with two first-places finishes, a second and this week's third. The team was without All-American Colin Troxler, who is recovering from a wrist injury. The Bulldogs have a fall schedule full of statistics to review and weakness to improve in the spring.
"Everybody has played well in a tournament, which is very promising," Snell said. "We'll have Colin back in the spring. We've put a couple of great rounds together. We can do it; we just have to work a little harder. After the first two MACJC tournaments, I think we just got a little complacent."
