Wedgeworth, No. 1 MGCCC storm back

Jackson Wedgeworth erased a two-shot first-round deficit Sunday to win medalist and lead No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast to victory in the first MACJC event of the season.

He finished 10-under over 36 holes, beating Meridian's Isaiah Jackson by two shots at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Raymond.

"It turns into match play," Wedgeworth said. "Once you get down the stretch on the back nine, everything was all square with nine holes left. It was a brand new tournament on the back nine, and I came out on top."

It was Wedgeworth's first collegiate tourney victory after four top-five finishes last season, including a third-place at the national championship.

Gulf Coast trailed Meridian by five shots after the first round, but the Eagles weren't able to maintain the pace. The Bulldogs had three players earn All-Tournament honors.

Wedgeworth (So., West Jones/Soso) was joined by Colby Blake (So., Parklane/Tylertown) and Logan Leary (So., Gonzales/Dutchtown, La.), who finished at even-par. Leary shot 68 Sunday to match Wedgeworth.

"Logan was the first one out and was playing well," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "He was 5-under at one time, and that kind of took off all the pressure. We were just kind of coasting, really."

Colby Entriken (So., Hancock/Pass Christian), playing on MGCCC's second team, was another shot back, with Miles Jackson (Fr. Biloxi/Biloxi) one more back after 71 Sunday.

All 10 MGCCC golfers shot 78 or better Sunday.

"You've got guys who would be starting on the top five of any community college in the state, and they're on the B-team," Wedgeworth said. "It just shows the strength and our depth, and I'm really excited for the rest of the year."

The second MACJC event will be played next weekend at Wolf Hollow Golf Course in Wesson.
