SAUCIER – No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast leads five MACJC teams in the MGCCC Fall Invitational, which started Monday at Grand Bear Golf Course.
The Bulldogs finished the first round 11-over, eight shots ahead of East Central and 13 ahead of Copiah-Lincoln. There's a tournament within a tournament here, with MACJC and overall hardware up for grabs.
Gulf Coast's Colby Blake (So., Parklane/Tylertown) is tied with East Central's Jacob Hamner at even-par 72 for the lead among MACJC players.
"He just stayed around even all day," MGCCC coach Tommy Snell said. "If he gets his putter going tomorrow, he could go low. He's playing really well right now."
The Bulldogs' Colby Entriken (So., Hancock/Pass Christian) is another shot back and Jackson Wedgeworth (So., West Jones/Soso), Brice Wilkinson (Fr. Madison Central/Madison) and Miles Jackson (Fr. Biloxi/Biloxi) shot 77.
"Colby Entriken played well on back nine to bring it back," Snell said. "He was 2-over at the turn and shot 1-under on the back. I was proud of my No. 5 guy for fighting back like that."
Golfers from four-year schools were still on the course Monday afternoon, but it appeared Gulf Coast would be either fifth overall in the whole field, which features 17 schools overall. The rest of the field is mostly NJCAA Division I or NAIA teams. MGCCC plays NJCAA Division II golf.
Snell thinks his squad could make up some ground on the top teams Tuesday.
"We didn't play very well," he said. "Jackson and those guys will be back. Carter got off to a bad start. I have complete confidence we'll have a good round tomorrow."
