Brice Wilkinson fired a 3-under 69 Monday to lead No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast to third place after the first round of the Carey Collegiate Classic at Canebrake Country Club in Hattiesburg.
Colby Blake (So., Parklane/Tylertown) shot 71 and is in a fourth-place tie.
Dalton State, which is ranked second in the NAIA, shot even-par to claim the team lead. Spring Hill, an NCAA Division II team is second a shot back. Gulf Coast was 8-over.
Meridian, ranked fourth in NJCAA Division II, is two shots behind the Bulldogs. Host William Carey, which is ranked 19th in NAIA, is sixth at 13-over.
Wilkinson (Fr. Madison Central/Madison) had two birdies on the front nine and three more on the back. He bogeyed 11 and 16 to finish at 3-under. He's tied with Thomas Ruli from Spring Hill for the lead.
The tournament concludes Tuesday.
