No. 1 Bulldogs trail by 2

No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast is in second place after the first round of a remarkably close first MACJC event of the season at Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Raymond.

"We played awful, but we were due a bad round," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "We've been playing so well. But even though we didn't play well, we hung in there. We've got a shot at coming back tomorrow."

The Bulldogs shot 15-over 303 and are two behind Meridian halfway through the tournament. The five-team field is separated by just four shots.

"It's crazy, isn't it?" Snell said. "It just shows you how competitive the MACJC has become in golf. It gets better every year."

Cameron Mobley (Fr., Northwest Rankin/Brandon), playing as an individual, is tied for the individual lead at even par. Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison) is tied for fourth two shots back, and Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishops Stortford, England) is another shot back tied for sixth.

The Bulldogs took all 12 players to Raymond to give the freshmen some experience.

"I told everybody to put that round behind them and come back out tomorrow and go out and attack it tomorrow," said Snell.
