PERKINSTON — One current Mississippi Gulf Coast golfer and one Bulldog alumnus will be in the 85-player field at the 2018 Patriot All-American Invitational in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison), last year's Phil Mickelson Award winner as the top freshman golfer in NJCAA Division II, will be participating, as well as former Bulldog Jackson Wedgeworth, now playing at North Alabama. Both were members of Gulf Coast's 2018 national championship team.
The 54-hole event will be played Dec. 29-31 at The Wigwam Golf Club. It's considered one of the elite amateur events in the country. Past participants include three-time major winner Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Daniel Berger and Bryson DeChambeau.
Each golfer honors a dead or severely injured soldier by carrying a golf bag bearing the name of that soldier. Before the tournament, participants receive a card with the soldier's story, so they can be familiar with who that person was, what they represented and how they were killed or wounded in action. At the conclusion of the tournament, the golf bags are shipped to players' schools and auctioned with all proceeds benefitting the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while in active service.
Wilkinson is playing for Sgt. Matthew L. Ingram, a Pearl, Mississippi, native, who was killed in August 2009 in Afghanistan. He is survived by his wife and daughter, who was 10 months old at the time of his death. She is a Folds of Honor scholarship recipient.
Wedgeworth is playing for Pfc. Stephen D. Bicknell, a native of Prattville, Ala., who was killed in Oct. 2006 in Iraq. His newlywed wife was expecting their son when he was dead, and he's a Folds of Honor Children's Fund scholarship recipient.
