Wedgeworth finishes 19th at Patriot

PERKINSTON — Former Mississippi Gulf Coast All-American golfer Jackson Wedgeworth finished tied for 19th at the Patriot All-American, held last weekend in Litchfield Park, Ariz., and current Bulldogs All-American Brice Wilkinson finished tied for 59th in an outstanding collegiate field.

Wedgeworth, who is now golfing at North Alabama, finished 6-over for the 54-hole tournament, which was won by former Meridian golfer Isaiah Jackson at 5-under. Wilkinson shot 14-over at The Wigwam Golf Club.

The 85 players in the field were all Ping All-Americans. Each golfer honors a dead or severely injured soldier by carrying a golf bag bearing the name of that soldier. Before the tournament, participants receive a card with the soldier's story, so they can be familiar with who that person was, what they represented and how they were killed or wounded in action. At the conclusion of the tournament, the golf bags are shipped to players' schools and auctioned with all proceeds benefitting the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while in active service.

Wilkinson played for Sgt. Matthew L. Ingram, a Pearl, Mississippi, native, who was killed in August 2009 in Afghanistan. He is survived by his wife and daughter, who was 10 months old at the time of his death. She is a Folds of Honor scholarship recipient

Wedgeworth played for Pfc. Stephen D. Bicknell, a native of Prattville, Ala., who was killed in Oct. 2006 in Iraq. His newlywed wife was expecting their son when he was dead, and he's a Folds of Honor Children's Fund scholarship recipient.

Wedgeworth and Wilkinson were part of MGCCC's national championship team in 2018, which edged Jackson's Meridian squad by one shot.
