No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast won the Carey Collegiate Classic by nine shots Tuesday, claiming the trophy at Canebrake Country Club in Hattiesburg for the first time.

The Bulldogs, who were the only community college team in the field, shot 5-under to finish at 6-under and extend their advantage over Loyola-New Orleans. Dalton State, which is ranked fifth in the Bushnell Golfweek NAIA Coaches Poll, was two more shots back, and Mobile was fourth at 8-over.

"We played very well," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "We took advantage of the holes we needed to, the par-5s."

Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England) won for the third time in the last four outings, firing a 69 to finish at 7-under. He was one shot ahead of Dalton's Ben Rebne and Loyola's Ryan Hicks, who were first-round co-leaders with Hopkins.

"It's going well right now," Hopkins said. "I just played solid all over. I putted well, I chipped it well, and I drove it well. Everything was quite good."

Jake Crosson (Fr., New Hope/Columbus) also shot 3-under to jump into a tie for fifth and make the All-Tournament team. Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison) fired 71 to finish tied for seventh.

Crosson overcame a double bogey on 16 by making birdie on the last two holes, and Wilkinson rallied from a lost ball on the first hole and a trip out of bounds on the fifth two shoot 2-under.

Host William Carey is ranked 10th in the Bushnell Golfweek Poll, and the Crusaders teams finish fifth and sixth.

It's the third time this season the team has come home with a trophy the school had never won. The defending NJCAA Division II champs also won the Wallace State Fall Invitational and the Coastal Alabama Invitational.

"It just shows that we're a solid team," Hopkins said. "We always seem to do well as a team. We've got solid chemistry."
