No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast won another MACJC regular-season event Tuesday, making it four-for-four in 2018-19. The Bulldogs topped host Meridian by 10 shots at Briarwood Country Club.
"I was proud of the guys for fighting through adversity," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "They didn't have their A game, probably didn't have their B game, but they fought through it."
Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England) fired Tuesday's low round, a 4-under 68, to surge to second place. He finished a shot behind Meridian's Mitchell Fifer and a shot ahead off teammate Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison). Hopkins finished 3-under for the 36-hole event.
Gulf Coast finished at 10-over for two days, with Copiah-Lincoln third at 39-over.
The Bulldogs' five-man team had four double-bogeys and a triple-bogey Tuesday. Snell said his team can't afford to do that down the line and repeat as national champions.
"We've got some things to work on, but we know what we need to work on," he said. "We'll do that before we go to our last regular-season event and on to postseason.
The fifth and final MACJC event will be played April 6-7 at Copiah-Lincoln's Wolf Hollow Golf Course in Wesson. It will be the final regular-season event before the MACJC Championship on April 13-14 at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Raymond. It will be hosted by Hinds.
