Wilkinson runs away with title

Brice Wilkinson ran away from the field Sunday, leading No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast to the title in the fifth MACJC regular-season event of the year in Wesson.

Wilkinson, a sophomore from Madison Central, fired a 7-under 65 to win medalist by seven shots over Meridian's Will Kidder.

"I had a good start," he said. "I eagled the first, birdied the second, made par on the third, birdied the fourth, so I'm 4-under through four. That's a good confidence builder, and I just carried it on through the rest of the day. You can keep going after it because I knew I was striking it well coming into the tournament."

Gulf Coast won the team title by 21 shots over Meridian, finishing at 5-over. The Bulldogs won every MACJC events this year.

"We didn't play great. We counted three 76s and just never got it untracked. It just goes to show you our depth. We had an individual make the All-Tournament Team. When we put it all together, we're going to be pretty good."

Nathan Woolard (Fr., Poplar Bluff/Poplar Bluff, Mo.), playing as an individual, shot 75 to finish 3-over and join Wilkinson on the All-Tournament Team by finishing tied for fifth.

Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England) and Jake Crosson (Fr., New Hope/Columbus) shot 4-over to finish tied for seventh, and Carter Nicholson (So., Pearl River Central/Carriere) was ninth and finished 6-over.

Patrick Powers (Fr., St. Stanislaus/Gulfport), playing as an individual, shot one of only three red numbers for a round in the tournament. He shot 71 to finish tied for 10th at 7-over.

Wilkinson played the front nine at 3-under, then birdied 11, 12 and 13. After a bogey at 14, he finished birdie-birdie on two tough finishing holes.

He did it after being diagnosed with a kidney stone on Monday. It was broken up Tuesday, and he eventually passed it, but he didn't feel great Saturday.

Sunday was a different story.

"He showed out today," Snell said. "He got it going today. That's typical Brice. When he gets it going, he can go low."

Gulf Coast begins postseason play Saturday in the MACJC Tournament at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Raymond. The two-day event finishes the next day.
