In the aftermath of severe storms that slammed Mississippi and the Southeast, the second round of the MACJC Tournament in Raymond was canceled Sunday morning. No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast won its eighth state championship since 2009 and 13th overall as a result of the Bulldogs' play in the first round.
Gulf Coast won by 10 shot over Meridian. The Bulldogs finished at 4-over 292. Host Hinds was third, Itawamba fourth and Copiah-Lincoln fifth.
Gulf Coast's Brice Wilkinson (So., Madison Central/Madison) and Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England) made the All-Tournament Team. Co-Lin's Bryson Jones won medalist with a 68, and Wilkinson was two shots back at 70. Hopkins tied for third at even-par.
Three Bulldogs were among five golfers tied for eighth at 3-over: Jake Crosson (Fr., New Hope/Columbus), Miles Jackson (So., Biloxi/Biloxi) and Patrick Powers (Fr., St. Stanislaus/Gulfport). Powers was playing as an individual.
Wilkinson won the Hubert Tucker Award, giving to the player with the lowest average in MACJC events. He averaged 70.91, exactly one shot better than Hopkins. Three other Bulldogs —Crosson, Nicholson and Woolard — finished in the top seven.
Gulf Coast will play in the District D Tournament in Amory on April 27-28. The NJCAA Division II Championship will be in Plymouth, Ind., on May 21-24.
