No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast put its first two competitive rounds in the book Monday in Jasper, Ala., and the Bulldogs have some work to do in the final round.
The Bulldogs, who won the Dan York Memorial Tournament hosted by Wallace State for the first time last year, are third in the 11-team field after 36 holes. They shot 1-under, six back of leaders Central Alabama. Calhoun is at 3-under at Musgrove Country Club.
"We played OK," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "We can always play better, but we played OK. Jake (Crosson) came through for us and played well, shot under-par both rounds, and so did Cameron (Mobley). It was really a team effort. For the first tournament, everybody played decent. I'm proud of them."
Crosson (Fr., New Hope/Columbus) is at 3-under 139, three behind Calhoun's Charlie Reeves. Mobley (Fr., Northwest Rankin/Brandon) shot back-to-back 70s and is tied for seventh.
Jon Hopkins (Fr., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England) is tied for 12th at even-par.
Gulf Coast is one of two NJCAA Division II teams in the field, with all but one of the other squads from Division I. Meridian, the other MACJC school, is in seventh at 14-over.
"We just have to play our game," Snell said. "It's cliché, but just play our game and we'll be fine. Jon didn't play up to his standards. If he plays up to his standard, and everybody else pitches in, we can catch CACC. But CACC's a good team. We'll have to play well to beat them."
