No. 2 Gulf Coast leads after 18

No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast is eight shots up on the field in the first MACJC event of the year, leading Copiah-Lincoln at the Hinds Fall Invitational after Saturday's first round in Raymond.

The Bulldogs shot 3-over on the 6,722-yard Eagle Ridge Golf Club, with Jake Crosson (So., New Hope/Columbus) tied for the individual lead. He shot 2-under and is tied with Hinds' Ryan Bell.

Crosson had four birdies and eagled 16 to survive a four-putt double bogey on No. 8.

"He was up and down all day," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "Nothing bothers him, though. He just goes about his business."

Three Gulf Coast golfers are tied for sixth at 1-over: Cameron Mobley (So., Northwest Rankin/Brandon), Jon Hopkins (So., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England) and Hamp Fairey (So., Oak Grove/Hattiesburg). Fairey is playing as an individual.

Patrick Powers (Fr., St. Stanislaus/Gulfport) is tied for 10th at 3-over.

Meridian, which was ranked seventh in the Bushnell Golfweek NJCAA Division II Coaches Poll, is third 15 strokes behind Gulf Coast.

The six teams will complete the tournament Sunday with 18 more holes.
