PERKINSTON — There will be a lot of good golf teams in town for the MGCCC Fall Invitational, which is being played Monday and Tuesday at Windance Country Club.
"We've got Central Alabama, the reigning (NJCAA) Division I champ," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "We've got Loyola of New Orleans, one of the top NAIA teams. As usual, we've got several D-I schools and our MACJC schools."
John A. Logan College and Rend Lake have come down from Illinois to play. There will be a separate tournament within a tournament for the MACJC teams, the third state event of the year for those six teams.
Gulf Coast's team will be Jon Hopkins (So., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England), Jake Crosson (So., New Hope/Columbus), Cameron Mobley (So., Northwest Rankin/Brandon), Patrick Powers (So., St. Stanislaus/Gulfport) and Hayden Green (So., D'Iberville/Biloxi). Oliver Harris (So., East Central/Hurley), Hamp Fairey (So., Oak Grove/Hattiesburg), Peyton Norwood (Fr., Jackson Prep/Madison) and Nathan Woolard (So., Poplar Bluff/Poplar Bluff, Mo.) will be playing as individuals.
The teams will be playing the 6,839-yard course designed by Mark McCumber.
"The course is absolutely perfect," Snell said. "The greens are perfect and the fairways are fast and firm. The rain hasn't slowed them down, so it should be a good test."
Speaking of rain, the tournament will have a shotgun start Monday to try to be some of the wet stuff.
"We're teeing off at 8 o'clock because it looks like the rains going to come at 1, 2 or 3," Snell said. "If we can get off at 8, we should be in before the thunderstorms hit us."
