No. 3 MGCCC wins 3rd MACJC event, finishes 2nd overall

No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast's Jon Hopkins cruised to medalist honors at the MGCCC Fall Invitational on Tuesday, and the Bulldogs won the third MACJC event of the year which was held as part of it by 27 strokes.

Central Alabama, the defending NJCAA Division I champion and second-ranked team in the country, shot 1-over at Windance Country Club to claim the title in the 15-team field. Gulf Coast finished six shots back in second overall.

"It's never fun finishing second, but with that strength of field, our guys played well," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "That's just golf. You're going to lose more than you win in a strong field like that. We did well in the MACJC. Central Alabama has a great team, and Dave (Jennings) is a great coach. They just outplayed us."

Hopkins finished at 10-under to win by five shots over Calhoun's Brayden Bendall. He shot 8-under 64 in the first round to seize control of the tournament.

"My goodness gracious, he lapped the field," Snell said. "Against those players, he won by five in a very strong field. It just goes to show you the sky's the limit for that boy. When he gets it going, he's as good as any golfer."

Jake Crosson (So., New Hope/Columbus) shot 1-under on Tuesday to bounce back from a disappointing first round and finish at 4-over for the tournament. He finished fourth among MACJC competitors to earn All-Tournament honors.

Patrick Powers (So., St. Stanislaus/Gulfport) and Hayden Green (So., D'Iberville/Biloxi) shot matching 78s to finish tied for 18th and tied for 20th, respectively. Green was making his first start in a big event.

Meridian finished second among MACJC at 34-over, with Copiah-Lincoln another four shots back.
