PERKINSTON — Through a strange set of circumstances, No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast will close out its fall schedule Monday and Tuesday close to home.
The Bulldogs will play in the Trojan Invitational hosted by Central Alabama, not in the Alexander City area southeast of Birmingham, but at The Preserve in Vancleave. That's about 45 minutes from the Perkinston Campus.
CACC's regular course isn't available for the event, and Dave Jennings, the Trojans' Hall of Fame coach, is buddies with the general manager at The Preserve.
"The golf course is in perfect condition," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "It was playing damp last week played it for our first practice round, but we played yesterday and it's started drying out. It's going to play perfect. The greens are nice and firm and fast. It'll be a real test of golf. It's going to be difficult."
Snell will send out a five-man team of Jon Hopkins (So., Hockerill Anglo-European College/Bishop's Stortford, England), Jake Crosson (So., New Hope/Columbus), Patrick Powers (So., St. Stanislaus/Gulfport), Nathan Woolard (So., Poplar Bluff/Poplar Bluff, Mo.) and Hayden Green (So., D'Iberville/Biloxi).
Gulf Coast has finished second to Central Alabama in two events already this year. The Trojans are defending NJCAA Division I national champions and have another strong team. It figures to be another strong field in Vancleave.
