PERKINSTON — Former Mississippi Gulf Coast softball coach Doris Smith will be on hand Saturday to throw out the first pitch where the field that bears her name has a new stadium.
The Lady Bulldogs take on Marion Military in a season-opening doubleheader for both teams. Ceremonies at Ross-Smith Field will start at 11:45 a.m., with the first pitch at noon.
Smith coached at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College for 20 years, compiling a 150-69 record in softball and a 192-141 record in basketball. When softball became sanctioned in the state of Mississippi in 1981, her Lady Bulldogs team went 24-2 and won the state championship. They won another in 1984, then won the NJCAA Region 23 title and finished seventh at the national championship. Gulf Coast repeated the seventh-place finish at nationals after winning state and region in 1986. Smith won two more South Division titles before retiring in 1992.
Ross-Smith Field was named in honor of her and her former boss, Sue Ross. Coach Smith was inducted into the MGCCC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 and the MACJC Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
The teams will play another doubleheader Sunday, also starting at noon. Season tickets and chairback seats can be purchased at http://mgcccbulldogs.com/tickets.
