PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast split with No. 12 Lansing on Saturday at Ross-Smith Field, but the Lady Bulldogs' loss had plenty of late excitement.
Gulf Coast needed only five innings to win the opener 9-1, thanks to a stellar game by Katie Beth Williams (So., Smithville/Smithville), then rallied twice late to force the second to nine innings, losing 5-3.
After the Stars (4-1) hit a solo home run to lead off the eighth, Shelby Archer (Fr., Pearl River Central/Picayune) clubbed her fifth homer of the season to tie it with two outs and a full count in the bottom of the inning.
Lansing got a two-out double of its own in the ninth, and Gulf Coast couldn't match it.
Archer had two hits in the game, and five on the day. Hopson had two hits.
In the opener, Williams had a two-run homer in the first inning of the second game, then made a diving catch going into foul territory in left field before doubling the runner returning to first to end the third. She doubled in another run in the bottom of the inning to cap a 2-for-2 game.
Marsha' Hunt (Fr., Philadelphia/Philadelphia) had two hits, and Kristen Cade (Fr., Harrison Central/Saucier) struck out seven to get the win.
Gulf Coast opens MACJC play Friday when Northwest visits Ross-Smith Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
