Lady Bulldogs blast Eagles

No. 13 Mississippi Gulf Coast blanked Hinds on Monday in Raymond, winning a pair of five-inning games 8-0 and 9-0. It's the fifth straight game opponents have been held to one run or less.

"We pitched good again," Gulf Coast coach Kenneth Long said. "We had some timely hits. There weren't many plays to be made on defense, but we made them. Our pitchers pretty much dominated."

Kristen Cade (Fr., Harrison Central/Saucier) and Avery Sanders (So., Edward Douglas/Thibodaux, La.) allowed only three hits and struck out 18, helping the Lady Bulldogs to their sixth straight win and 10th in their last 11 games.

Gulf Coast (23-9, 15-3 MACJC) stays in third place in the conference, two back of No. 1 Jones. The Lady Bulldogs start a two-day road trip Thursday with a visit to No. 2 LSU Eunice. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with another road doubleheader Friday at Mississippi Delta.

Mya Hopson (So., Madison Central/Madison) had a two-run double and Kaitlynn McGoey (So., Long Beach/Long Beach) had a two-run single in the first inning of the opener, when Gulf Coast surged to a 6-0 lead.

Hopson had two doubles, and Briana Shores (Fr., Richland/Richland) had a double among her three hits. Camryn Williams (So., White Hall/White Hall, Ark.) had two hits and two RBI.

"Bri is really in a zone at the plate," Long said. "She's swinging at good pitches, and her timing is real good. She's doing a great job at the plate."

Cade struck out three in the first inning and two in every other inning to improve to 12-2. She's won her last five.

"Both of them are just comfortable," Long said. "They know what's working for them. Avery's screwball is really good. Her changeup is really good. Kristen is throwing her riseball. They're in a groove right now."

Sanders (7-2) struck out seven in her one-hitter. Her double in the second opened the scoring, and Hannah Hembree (So., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) added an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.

Sanders and Hembree drew bases-loaded walks in the third, with McGoey driving in two more with a single. McGoey would add a third RBI on a groundout, and Bailey Massey (So., Bruce/Bruce) picked up her second hit and drove in another run in the fifth. She doubled earlier in the game.

Shelby Archer (Fr., Pearl River Central/Picayune) and Katie Beth Williams (So., Smithville/Smithville) also had two hits.

Hinds falls to 11-22, 4-13.
