No. 7 MGCCC in fight for 1st

NOTE: Updated to reflect Tuesday's NJCAA Division II poll, which saw Gulf Coast move up three spots to seventh.

PERKINSTON — No. 7 Mississippi Gulf Coast finds itself tied first place in the loss column with a tough road doubleheader at Southwest on tap Wednesday.

The games will be streamed at First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Summit.

The Lady Bulldogs and No. 10 Itawamba have played four fewer games than No. 3 Jones, leaving them two games back in the standings. Jones has its open date coming this weekend, and Gulf Coast has makeup games at Mississippi Delta still to schedule.

Last Time Out

  • MGCCC blanked Hinds in a pair of five-inning games at Raymond on April 15, winning 8-0 and 9-0. The Lady Bulldogs have allowed one or fewer runs in their last five games.
  • Southwest swept Coahoma 9-0 and 13-3 on Wednesday in Clarksdale, setting a school record for victories.

Previous Meeting

Gulf Coast swept Southwest 8-1 and 7-4 on April 10, 2018, at William Carey in Hattiesburg. Avery Sanders (So., Edward Douglas/Thibodaux, La.) and Betty Mingo (So., Choctaw Central/Philadelphia) pitched complete games and also hit home runs.

  • Gulf Coast ranks 10th among NJCAA Division II teams with a 2.24 ERA. The Bulldogs have thrown three straight shutouts.
  • Kristen Cade (Fr., Harrison Central/Saucier) is tied for ninth in NJCAA Division II with 139 strikeouts and ranks seventh with 10.28 K/7.
  • Avery Sanders (So., Edward Douglas/Thibodaux, La.) hasn't allowed a run in her last 15 innings, including back-to-back shutouts. She's 17th in the country with a 1.69 ERA and 18th with 8.13 K/7.
  • Shelby Archer (Fr., Pearl River Central/Picayune) is tied for 12th in the country with 12 home runs.
