Cade throws no-hitter in MGCCC sweep

Kristen Cade threw a no-hitter for No. 7 Mississippi Gulf Coast, setting the table for a sweep of Southwest at Summit.

The Lady Bulldogs won the first game 12-1 in six innings behind the no-no, then finished things off 8-3 in the nightcap.

Cade, a freshman right-hander from Harrison Central, struck out nine and walked one in her first collegiate no-hitter to improve to 13-2. She's a perfect 9-0 in league play.

"I wish they wouldn't have scored, but it's still special," she said. They were all swinging at my riseball and chasing my curve. Goey did amazing today."

"Goey" is Kaitlynn McGoey, a sophomore right fielder from Long Beach, who the Summit police department has an APB out on for theft. She was robbing apparent hits all night long.

"I just had so much adrenaline going," she said. "I just went for the ball. It felt great to make those plays."

McGoey also had two hits in the first game, scoring three times and driving in two runs. Shelby Archer (Fr., Pearl River Central/Picayune) had three hits and three RBI, and Bailey Massey had three hits.

Camryn Williams (So., White Hall/White Hall, Ark.), Katie Beth Williams (So., Smithville/Smithville) and Kayla Cade (Fr., Harrison Central/Saucier) also had two safeties in a 15-hit attack. Camryn Williams had a solo home run.

Marsha' Hunt (Fr., Philadelphia/Philadelphia) had two hits and drove in three runs in Game 2, when the Bulldogs broke open a 1-0 game by scoring five in the third. Hannah Hembree (So., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) also had two hits.

Avery Sanders (So., Edward Douglas/Thibodaux, La.) improved to 8-2.

Southwest (25-10, 12-8 MACJC) added a pair of runs in the seventh to break a streak of six straight games holding opponents to one run or less, but Gulf Coast upped its win streak to eight.

"Our team's having fun and making things happen," Long said. "We're playing loose, getting good pitching, good defense and good hitting. That's a good combination."

Gulf Coast (25-9, 17-3) travels to No. 10 Itawamba on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon. The game will be streamed at https://www.letsgoicctv.com/blue.
