PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College has hired Stacy Malone as its new women's basketball assistant coach.
"I knew the program was on its way to something great," Malone said. "I just wanted to be part of the greatness that MGCCC basketball is embracing."
She joins Hope Adams, who is entering her first season as Lady Bulldogs head coach and second at the school.
"Coach Hope and I had the great opportunity of coaching together in Oxford," Malone said. "Knowing Coach Hope, she's very approachable and has great understanding with the girls. She's got great vision for the women's basketball program, and that made my decision that much easier."
Malone has been the assistant girls basketball coach at Oxford High School since 2010. The Lady Chargers compiled a sparkling 138-38 record, winning the Class 5A state championship in 2012 at the end of an undefeated 33-0 record. Oxford made the North State playoffs every season.
Malone had a distinguished playing career at Delta State, where she was Gulf South Conference Player of the Year and a two-time All-American. She's also a member of that conference's Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and was named to the Delta State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.
Malone played for the Lady Statesmen from 1994-1997 and still has the school's highest single-season field-goal percentage (.698, 1996-97). She ranks fifth with 1,886 career points.
"She has a great personality on top of experience," Adams said. "You add some wisdom with my youthfulness, and there's good chemistry. We balance each other out really, really well. Her basketball experience really brings something to the program. When you're on recruiting trips visiting with parents, she has kids the same age as theirs. That makes them feel safe giving us their kids."
Malone has three daughters: Alexus, 22, who plays at Louisiana Tech; Kyla, 19, who plays at Pearl River Community College; and Katelyn, 14.
