PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Athletic Hall of Famer Brittney Reese has qualified for the women's long jump finals at the IAAF World Championship in London.
She jumped 6.50 meters (21 feet, 4 inches) to place ninth on a stormy night at Olympic Stadium, site of Reese's gold medal performance at the Olympics in 2012. Darya Klishina, a Russian participating as a neutral because of that country's doping scandal, led the field with a jump of 21-10.25.
"It was wet. You know it's kind of hard being a jumper and jumping in the wet," Reese said. "The name of the game is making it to the final, so everything that happened today is erased and you just get ready for Friday. My competitors, they're going to go for it, and I have to do the same thing. I think the weather will be pretty decent on Friday, so I think it will be good."
The finals are scheduled to take place Friday at 1:10 p.m. CT.
Reese is trying to win her seventh IAAF championship overall. She's won three indoors and three outdoors. In addition to her gold medal, she's won silver last summer in Rio de Janiero. She's also piled up 10 U.S. championships in indoor and outdoor competitions.
Reese played basketball at Gulf Coast, graduating in 2006. She went on to be an NCAA champion at Ole Miss.
