Lady Bulldogs’ erase late deficit, fall at buzzer

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast climbed a big mountain with a frenetic comeback effort but lost 77-75 on Hinds' last shot in the dying seconds.

A bucket by Victoria Clark with 1.8 seconds left broke a 14-1 run by the Lady Bulldogs in the final four minutes. They trailed by as many as 18 in the third quarter and by 13 with 4:42 left.

"Tonight, we got a lot better," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "We needed this. I left the game feeling better. We grew up right here. Now they understand we can do this."

Azaria Howard (Fr, Richland/Richland) had 14 points to lead Gulf Coast (6-11, 0-8). Briana Thompson (Fr, Jackson/Wingfield) and Eanna Sims (So, Jackson/Forest Hill) had 13, and Shelli Thigpen (Fr, Wylie, Texas/Wylie) added 10.

Thigpen's layup with 4:12 to play started Gulf Coast's run. She added a baseline jumper, and when she missed two free throws, Thompson got the put-back to make it 74-67.

Hinds' single free throw didn't stop the momentum. Howard got a put-back, and Thompson added a layup with 73 seconds to play to cut the deficit to four.

Howard made it a one-possession game with a shot in the lane with 27.0 seconds left, and Hinds turned it over to give the Bulldogs a chance to tie or win.

Thigpen got the inbounds passes, slashed just inside the free-throw line and nailed a floating one-handed jumper with 12.2 seconds left.

"The girls started to believe they could win the game," Adams said. "I was very proud of them. We came in with 15 seconds left, I drew up a play and they executed it perfectly."

Clark got to the basket along the baseline and squeezed up her game-winner for Hinds (13-4, 4-4). Gulf Coast's three-quarter court shot at the buzzer fell short.

"That last two minutes, I saw a team coming together. We've got six more games left. IF we stay with that mentality, we'll get some wins."

Gulf Coast returns to action Monday with a road trip to Wesson. The Lady Bulldogs take on Copiah-Lincoln at 6 p.m. They return to Perkinston on Thursday when East Central visits.
