PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast got behind big early but used a three-pronged attack to come back and beat Southwest 78-69 on Monday at the Weathers-Wentzell Center.
"No. 3 (Jolie Williams) had 22 points at halftime, and I told them she can't score this half," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "She did a great job scoring, and we were covering some of the shots. Our zone has been working all year. We had to stick to our game plan."
Williams managed only four points after the break, and Gulf Coast exploded for 26 fourth-quarter points to finish the comeback. The Bulldogs didn't take their first lead until 6:18 were left in the game when Amayla Sharif (Fr., Phoebus/Chester, Pa) converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to make it 61-60.
Goolsby nailed her first huge 3-pointer of the quarter to make it 64-62, then another with 2:12 to play to give Gulf Coast a 69-66 lead it would never relinquish.
"I told her I was proud of her," Adams said. "I told her No. 3 was an out-of-stater, and she took that to heart. She came out and played like an out-of-stater tonight."
Gulf Coast (10-1, 3-1 MACJC South) rebounded from its first loss of the season last time out, thanks to a reenergized White. After scoring only two points against Copiah-Lincoln, she was a force in the low post.
"I told her when she's not engaged, when she's not moving when she's not the best athlete of the floor, that limits who we are," Adams said. "We're an inside-out team, and her teammates get more confidence when she's playing well."
The Bulldogs trailed 22-8 in the final three minutes of the first quarter but were within eight at the end of the first 10 minutes, and it was 41-35 at halftime. Gulf Coast was within three at the end of the third quarter to Southwest (9-3, 2-1).
MGCCC now plays six of its next seven games on the road. The Bulldogs are at Meridian on Thursday, with tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
