Gulf Coast edged late

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast saw archrival Pearl River hit a free throw with 2.5 seconds left to drop a key MACJC South matchup 57-56 Thursday at the Weathers-Wentzell Center.

Nakendra Owens (So., Port Gibson /Port Gibson), who led Gulf Coast with 19 points, hit a 3-pointer with 27.2 seconds left to tie the game at 56. The Bulldogs, however, fouled a driving Pearl River player who converted 1 of 2 attempts for the win.

Daphane White (So., St. Martin/Gulfport) had 18 points for Gulf Coast, which led by five points late in the third.

Gulf Coast caught a break Thursday when Hinds upset Copiah-Lincoln. The Bulldogs remain in third place in the South, a game up on Pearl River and Co-Lin with two to play. They travel to Jones on Monday and close out the regular season next Thursday with Hinds at Perk.
