PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast dropped its opening game of the 2017 women's soccer season Tuesday, falling 5-1 to Holmes at the MGCCC Soccer Complex.
"We still have a lot of work to do defensively. All 11 players are not connecting right now. We've got back-to-back games this weekend, so we're going to have to figure it out soon."
Jess Shepherd (So., Parrswood/Manchester, England) scored in the 86th minute for the Lady Bulldogs only goal.
The Lady Bulldogs had a couple of key injuries, with starting forward Casey LaFontaine (So., Pass Christian/Pass Christian) and starting keeper Haley Lott (Fr., West Harrison/Gulfport) leaving the game in the first half. Summer Hansen (Fr., West Harrison/Gulfport), another starter, sat the entire game.
The teams last met in the MACJC semifinals last season here at Perk, where Holmes won 2-1.
Gulf Coast returns to action Friday with the first of back-to-back games up north. The Lady Bulldogs play Northwest on Friday and Southwest Tennessee on Saturday.
Their next home game is Sept. 5 when archrival Pearl River visits Perkinston.
