PERKINSTON — The Mississippi Gulf Coast women's soccer team has played only three of its first nine games at home.
That's getting ready to change with the second half of MACJC South Division play starting Tuesday when Jones County visits the MGCCC Soccer Complex for a 5 p.m. game.
"We haven't had many home games, so we haven't had a whole lot home-field advantage," Lady Bulldogs coach Jackie Rhodes said. "To have three of the last four division games at home is comforting, and we should have more confidence."
The game will be streamed online at https://livestream.com/BulldogLIVE/events/7768429.
Rhodes is hoping her team, which is 3-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the South, can find some more offense against first-place Jones (5-1-1, 3-0-1).
"We've lacked in goals this year compared to last year," she said. "We're looking to put some goals on the board. I think we're better offensively than we were the first round of division games, so really we just need to capitalize on that."
The teams met in Ellisville on Sept. 1, and the Lady Bobcats stole the game with a last-minute penalty kick in a 2-1 win. The Lady Bulldogs scored the game's first goal, but couldn't hold on.
They'll also be concentrating more on defense, with their first three choices at keeper sidelined. Haley Lott (Fr., West Harrison/Gulfport) was lost for the year in the preseason with a wrist injury, and backup Chascidi Martin (Fr., Terry/Byram) sustained a concussion two weeks ago.
Defender Sarah Shepherd (So., Germantown/Germantown, Tenn.) suffered a wrist injury warming up for her first game between the pipes, pressing Bailey LaFontaine (Fr., Pearl/Pearl) into action in a 2-1 win at Hinds. She'd never played keeper before.
"This go-round, it's protect the goal at all costs," Rhodes said. "We don't have a keeper in goal, we have a field player in goal. She's super inexperienced, so our first priority is to protect the goal. Then we have to work off the counterattack."
