MGCCC pushes No. 14 Holmes to limit

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast put a scare into nationally ranked Holmes, but the Lady Bulldogs lost 4-3 on a tough goal in the first minute of overtime.

"They were up for the challenge against the No. 14 team in the country," Gulf Coast coach Jackie Rhodes said. "We rose to the challenge. We missed some opportunities in front of goal. I'm upset with how we lost, but overall I'm pleased with how we played."

Gulf Coast (3-3) led on three separate occasions but was unable to hold on against the top team from the MACJC North.

Paris Payne (Fr., Southampton England/Saints Foundation), who was named MACJC Offensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, scored in the second minute off an assist from Kaitlyn Harwell (So., Wiggins/Stone).

Harwell put the Lady Bulldogs back in front 2-1 in the 34th minute, with Payne returning the favor on the assist.

Gulf Coast took the lead well into the second half before a flurry of goals finished off the game. Holmes tied in the 73rd minute before Jade Bernet (Fr., Alicante, Spain/Narrabundah) made it 3-2 four minutes later.

Holmes (8-0) tied it on a penalty kick with eight minutes left in regulation before scoring on a 55-yard shot in overtime for the golden goal.

Gulf Coast, which was playing its fourth game in seven days, has a couple of days to prepare for a game against the Mississippi University for Women, a four-year school in the USCAA. The Lady Bulldogs travel to Columbus for a 4 p.m. game.
