Lott saves, sends MGCCC to title game

Lott saves, sends MGCCC to title game

Mississippi Gulf Coast women's soccer coach Jackie Rhodes gives one simple piece of information to keeper Haley Lott whenever her team is tied after overtime.

Saturday in Ellisville, she executed to perfection in the MACJC semifinals against No. 10 Holmes.

"We tell her before every PK shootout she just has to stop one," Rhodes said. "She stopped one and we won the game."

The teams were scoreless through two 10-minute overtime periods, just like the 90 preceding minutes. The Lady Bulldogs advanced to the state championship game with a 4-2 margin in the shootout.

Gulf Coast will play No. 16 Jones at 5 p.m. Sunday, with the Lady Bobcats destroying Pearl River 6-0 in the other semifinal. The game will be streamed at http://jcjc.tv/.

"We had to defend a lot," Rhodes said. "We had to weather a few storms, but overall that determination kept us in the game. We didn't create a whole lot on the attack, but we were able to catch a couple of counters and put some pressure on them. We did enough to win. It's exciting."

Ivy Savell (Fr., Corinth/Corinth), Hannah Helms (Fr., Southaven/Southaven) and Aniadria Bounds (So., Biloxi/Biloxi) made the first three Gulf Coast penalties before Holmes (15-0-1) sailed its third attempt over the bar.

Chloe Fell (Fr., Bury, England/Woodhey) kept the Lady Bulldogs perfect with the next one before Lott, a sophomore from West Harrison, played hero. It followed a perfect 110 minutes of play.

"Haley came up big for us on a few big saves when they were really dangerous, a few 1v1s," Rhodes said. "They had a lot of shots that were wide and over the goal. She had to come up with a few big saves, especially in overtime and the PK shootout."

The last kick off the game was played low to Lott's left. She dove, extended her left arm and pushed it wide. She popped up, put her hands on top of her head and then squatted down before sprinting out to meet two waves of teammates. One rushed her from the halfway line and another ran in from her right from the bench.

"I think adrenaline is what's going to push us through tomorrow," Rhodes said. "We're banged up and tired, but I'm hoping to pull this thing off. It's an underdog story, and we're hoping to pick it off."
