Bio
Julie Newell is Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Athletic Academic Advisor. She joined the college in 2017.
Newell monitors the academic progress and performance of the student-athletes, advises and registers them for classes, tutors those in need and ensures they attend class. Her success in getting them diplomas is told in a single number: 96.3 percent in 2020. She creates academic achievement awards, community service and outreach programs, as well as a life skills program.
Gulf Coast led the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference in 2020 with 70 NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Award winners and 104 MACCC All-Academic Award winners.
Newell works closely with the coaches and athletic director on compliance and eligibility matters.
She was the head women’s golf coach at The University of Southern Mississippi from 2000-2015 after one year in the same position at East Tennessee State University. Newell played on the LPGA Tour in 1997 after having been a two-time All-American at the University of Miami.
She was ranked as high as third in the country in college and reached No. 6 in the country as an amateur.
Newell has a bachelor’s in business management and organization from Miami and a master’s in sport management and administration from USM. She is a collegiate golf recruiting advisor for SportForce.
Newell and her husband, Glenn, have six children, Cameron, 22, Jessica 20, Gabby, 19, Ben, 16, Brodie, 13, and Cassie 13.
