Gulf Coast opens MACJC play at Hinds

PERKINSTON – Mississippi Gulf Coast will play Hinds in the MACJC men's soccer opener for both teams.

The battle won't just be about the 90 minutes in Raymond on Wednesday.

"It's an important game for them and for us," Bulldogs coach Chris Handy said. "We see Hinds as somebody we're going to have to compete with if we're going to accomplish our goals. It's an important measuring stick to see where we're at with so many new faces."

The teams have met in the MACJC playoffs the last two years, each knocking the other out of the postseason once. It stands to reason the Bulldogs and Eagles might see each other again after the regular season.

The results in all the contests will affect recruiting, too.

Hinds (1-1) lost to Lewis & Clark 4-2 the day before Gulf Coast fell to the Trailblazers 1-0 over the weekend. The Eagles defeated Jones 4-2, giving Hinds coach Doug Williams his 200th victory there. Williams' teams have won nine state titles.

"I know they have a lot of continuity with the guys they've brought in," Handy said. "In the history of MACJC, they have a lot of titles. They're always going to be well coached and they're going to try to play. We're going to have to be disciplines, make sure we're working hard and stick to the game plan. If you do that, we'll be fine."
