The Mississippi Gulf Coast women's soccer team's first regular-season game was a tough one against 13th-ranked Lewis & Clark.

The Trailblazers defeated the Lady Bulldogs 7-0 on Saturday in Raymond. Gulf Coast plays its first MACJC opponent Wednesday, returning to Raymond to play Hinds on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

"I told them I know it's a blow to your egos, but these tough games are preparing us for Wednesday and our in-state games," said coach Jackie Rhodes.

Rhodes will have some morale building to do this week, but there were positives during the loss.

"We saw several freshmen step up," she said. "We got a lot of out of some freshmen which was unexpected, so that's a positive. "

Gulf Coast's first home game is Sept. 1 when East Central visits Perkinston.
