PERKINSTON – Mississippi Gulf Coast lost a heartbreaker four days ago, so the Lady Bulldogs' victory Tuesday was doubly sweet.
Moriah Minnis poked in a rebound in the 105th minute, midway through double overtime, to lift her club to a 1-0 win over 10-player Holmes.
"We lost a game this weekend in the second overtime, and that hurt," Gulf Coast interim coach Jackie Rhodes said. "It's nice to get an win in overtime today.
"I know they're tired. We've had a long weekend, but the fact that we could push through, keep fighting and get the victory feels good."
Gulf Coast improved to 4-7 in the non-South Division game. Holmes falls to 5-4.
Holmes lost defender Dominique Butler six minutes into the second half when she picked up her second yellow card. Gulf Coast was able to generate a flurry of chances near the end of regulation and into the first overtime, but it wasn't until Minnis cleaned up through a maze of Holmes defenders.
"Erin (Dawe) took a shot and it bounced off the goalie," Minnis said. "I was just there to swoop in hit it into the net. There were a lot of people."
Gulf Coast returns to action Friday when Jacksonville College visits Perkinston at 6 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs will do so after having Wednesday off thanks to the victory that felt so good.
"It's awesome," Minnis said, "because we can sleep tonight with a victory."
