Torrey named All-American
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast's Deandre Torrey has been named to the NJCAA All-American team for his outstanding freshman season.
"It means everything," he said. "It's one of the goals I strove for this year. I strove to be an All-American."
The running back from Gautier earned Second Team honors after finishing third in the country with 144.2 yards per game.
Torrey ran 185 times for 1,298 yards and 12 touchdowns. His 7.0 yards per carry ranked seventh in the country.
"The O-Line paved the way for me," he said. "I wouldn't have been able to do anything without them."
Torrey is expected to parlay his fantastic first year into a four-year scholarship on Junior College Midyear Signing Day on Wednesday. He was a qualifier out of Gautier High School and will have four years to play three at the next level.
"Gulf Coast pretty much gave me a second chance in life," Torrey said. "They gave me a shot, and it's given me a bigger shot to do what I always wanted to do. It helped me in the classroom as well, getting me situated with my classes"
