10 Bulldogs earn All-MACCC South

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast placed 10 players on the All-MACCC South Division football team for the 2022 season, the league announced today.

There are six Bulldogs on the First Team: defensive lineman Scott Burton, linebacker Drake Thornton, quarterback Pat McQuaide, running back Cam Thomas, wide receiver Keymari Odum and kicker Gabe Showalter.

Showalter was named MACCC South Division Special Teams Player of the Year.

Gulf Coast has four on the Second Team, including defensive lineman John Brown, linebacker Hayden Hill, offensive lineman Zerian Hudson and return specialist Jonathan Harris.

FIRST TEAM

DL Scott Burton

Burton, a sophomore from Bogue Chitto, finished third in the MACCC with 10.5 sacks. He had 51 total tackles for the Bulldogs, plus a fumble recovery.

LB Drake Thornton

Thornton, a sophomore from Gautier, ranked in the top 10 in the MACCC with 83 total tackles. He had 5.5 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup.

QB Pat McQuaide

McQuaide, a freshman from Solon, Ohio, led the nation in passing yards (273.0 ypg) and tied for the lead with 24 touchdowns throwing. He ranks second in the Gulf Coast record book in passing yards in a season (2,730), yards passing and rushing (2,839), completion percentage (64.5) and touchdown passes (24).

RB Cam Thomas

Thomas, a sophomore from Picayune, set a school record with a 99-yard touchdown run in the regular-season matchup against East Mississippi. He finished seven in the NJCAA and second in the MACCC by averaging 82.4 yards per game, and he scored eight touchdowns.

WR Keymari Odum

Odum, a sophomore from Haines City, Fla., led the country by averaging 93.9 receiving yards and with 61 receptions, which is the third-most in school history. He's second with 10 touchdowns.

K Gabe Showalter

Showalter, a freshman from St. Martin, made 42 of 43 point-after attempts and eight of his 10 field goals. He shined on kickoffs, where Gulf Coast led the country with a 61.1 yard average. He had 32 touchbacks on 61 kickoffs. 

SECOND TEAM

DL John Brown

Brown, a sophomore from Jackson, had 38 total tackles. He had 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a pass breakup. 

LB Hayden Hill

Hill, a sophomore from Flowood, finished fourth in the MACCC with 91 tackles. He had eight tackles for loss, two sacks, two fumble recoveries and a pass breakup.

OL Zerian Hudson

Hudson, a freshman from Brookhaven, was a key member of an offensive line that helped produce the second-most prolific offense in the NJCAA (442.0 yards per game). 

RET Jonathan Harris

Harris, a sophomore from Hattiesburg, finished third in the country by averaging 14.2 yards on 23 punt returns, best in the MACCC, and scored on a 75-yard return. As a receiver, he caught 22 passes for 344 yards and a touchdown.
