No. 12 Bulldogs pick up 3 more Texas wins
No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast won three matches Monday in the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship in Tyler, Texas, but Valeria Callejo-Vivar's run in the championship draw came to an end.
"We played very well," Gulf Coast coach Sam Blackburn said. "Valeria played a really tough opponent and had played a lot of tough tennis the last few days. She really hung in there with a really good player."
In the consolation bracket, Lauren Sullivan (So., Laurel/Laurel Christian) won twice, and Karla Bethea (So., Edwards/Homeschool) won once. Both are still alive in their brackets but will likely have to wait out some rain.
Beathea, who had beaten Mercer County's Makenna Swasey 8-0 in the No. 6 quarterfinals, was getting ready to start her semifinal match when weather hit. She's scheduled to play tomorrow, but the forecast doesn't look promising.
Sullivan got her matches in as organizers rushed head of the storms. She beat Southwestern Illinois' Rylan Gulley 8-2 and Barton County's Salalee Seejong 8-2 to make it to the No. 4 finals.
"Lauren and Carla both came out strong," Blackburn said. "They did their jobs. They're both playing good and definitely have a shot at winning in their draws."
Callejo-Vivar has knocked off the four-seed in her opening match in No. 2 singles, but the five-seed beat her Monday. She lost in straight sets to Eastern Florida State's Elena Martinez Prado.
