Gulf Coast finishes 2nd at Hinds

Mississippi Gulf Coast got passed by Meridian, the team its tied with for fifth in the country, on Sunday in the final round of the Hinds Fall Invitational in Raymond. 

The Bulldogs shot 7-over on Sunday, and the Eagles turned a one-shot deficit after the first round into a five-stroke victory at Eagle Ridge Golf Club.

"I think we're going to have to be able to take our lumps mentally," Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. "We have to try to control the things we can control. The golf course and conditions that are beyond our control, we're going to have to let that stuff go. I think some of those mental mistakes may have cost us today."

Reeves Johnson (So., Madison/Germantown) finished 4-under and made the All-Tournament. Northeast Mississippi's Tate Dickerson won medalist at 6-under, followed a shot back by Meridian's Noah Bumgarner. 

"I was really proud of Reeves," Thornton said. "He really stayed in a good state of mind and really let his talent take over today. He was able to put himself in position to win the golf tournament down the stretch."

Chase Kaiser (Fr., Natchez/Cathedral) and Matt Wilkinson (So., Madison/Madison Central) tied for seventh at 3-over, with Spence Davis (Fr., Madison/Madison Central) and David Beard (Fr., Madison/Madison Central) tied for 11^th.

Gulf Coast is back on the course in competition at the Central Alabama Invitational on Oct. 4-5. The two-day event will be played at Lagoon Park Golf Club in Montgomery.
