No. 2 Bulldogs top D-II teams in Foley after 36

No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast is the top NJCAA Division II team after the first two rounds of the GlenLakes Invitational on Monday in Foley, Ala.

The Bulldogs finished at 7-over, putting them 16 shots back of Central Alabama, which is No. 2 in Division I. Eastern Florida State, which is sixth in Division I, is in second at 2-under.

Gulf Coast was tied with Central Alabama at even-par after the first round, with EFSU a shot back.

"I thought we played really well," Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. "We had a good first round, then the wind picked up on the back nine. We may not have kept pace with Central Alabama and Eastern Florida State, but if you look at the rest of the scores, we were the only other team to beat 300 (in the afternoon)."

Ethan Trouth (So., Sutton Coldfield, England/The Streetly Academy) was the most consistent Bulldog, and his 73-72 put him in 12^th place. Chase Kaiser (Fr., Natchez/Cathedral) is 3-over tied for 15^th.

"You can't say enough about the work they've put in," Thornton said. "To see the results coming has been really good to see."

Reeves Johnson (So., Madison/Germantown) and Matt Wilkinson (So., Madison/Madison Central) are tied for 19^th at 7-over.

Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College is the next Division II team in the standing. Gulf Coast is 14 shots ahead of ABAC and 30 ahead of MACCC-rival Meridian.

"We've had some guys step up here in the last few weeks," Thornton said. "I think we're in a really good spot heading into the postseason in the next two or three weeks."

The tournament concludes Tuesday after the final 18 holes. It's being played at GlenLakes Golf Club, where Gulf Coast won the NJCAA Division II championship in 2018.
