Travis named All-American
PERKINSTON — Rakeya Travis helped Mississippi Gulf Coast reach the Final Four in the national tournament last month, and now she's been named a well-deserving First-Team NJCAA All-American.
The national organization announced the postseason honor Friday. The selections were made by the NJCAA Division II Softball Committee.
Travis, a sophomore shortstop from Poplarville, batted .437 with 17 home runs and 70 RBI. All those total led the team, and she finished second in the MACCC in RBI and third in home runs.
Gulf Coast finished fourth at the NJCAA Division II Softball Championship in Oxford, Ala.
Travis is the 10th All-American in school history and the first since 2017. The others are Izzy Werdann, Kaitlin Lee, Lexie Mathis, Ashley Nodturff, Cindy Hayes, Danielle Ryan, Holly Lawrence, Emily LeBlanc and Reina Baluja.
