Gulf Coast sweeps 2 at Baton Rouge

After three innings at Baton Rouge, Mississippi Gulf Coast trailed by five runs and Bulldogs coach Rodney Batts was more than a little worried.

He didn't need to be. Gulf Coast (3-1) stormed back to win the opener 11-10, then crushed the Bears 10-1 in the nightcap.

"Our hitters kept plugging away and kept putting good at bats together," Batts said. "Every time they'd score, we'd match it. We needed every run we got."

Marcus Buckley went 2-for-5 with two RBI, and Justin Nussbaum had a double and three RBI.

Tyler Evans and Sam Taylor had two hits and an RBI each. Michael Shubert doubled, walked, was hit by three pitches and had an RBI.

Chris Crosby helped calm the first game down, pitching 4.1 innings. He struck out five while allowing four runs. David Warman got the win in 2.2 innings of relief, with Brandon Kennedy picking up his second save of the season.

"We weren't pitching very well at the time," Batts said. "They were swinging the bats and hitting every mistake we made. But Crosby settled in and threw good. The bullpen guys came in and held them in check and gave us a chance."

Irby Dossett blanked the Bears the first four innings of Game 2, striking out six and allowing four hits. Batts said he was working both sides of the plate effectively.

"Irby threw really good," he said. "He had all three pitches working. His breaking ball, he could throw it at any time. He really kept them off balance with it."

Buckley had another two-hit game, including a double. Nussbaum and Brycen Burge also had two hits, with Burge doubling and driving in three runs. John Shank also doubled.

Mark Wood, Bruce Mathes III and Joseph Gennaro each pitched an inning of relief.

"We had one error on the day," Batts said. "We had a big double play there we turned when they had some momentum. We made the tough plays, and we made the routine plays, which is what's big for me."

Mississippi Gulf Coast returns to action Friday for its second date at MGM Park. St. Louis Community College visits for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
